In the rural communities of the Deep South, where there isn't always a hell of a lot to do, embellishing minor events to liven everyday conversation takes on a whole new meaning. From Eudora Welty's delicate, lilting prose to Harry Crews's ball-peen-hammer attack, almost any Southern writer worth his or her salt is expert at telling stories. ![]() At the heart of just about any writing from the South that really matters is the gift - some would call it the art - of storytelling. ![]()
